How to identify a bird from a picture

  1. Add where and when

Enter a town or region and an approximate date, month or season.

  2. Choose one bird photo

Use a clear photo. If the bird is small in the frame, crop it first.

  3. Check the suggestion

Complete verification, select Identify bird, then compare the result with your photo.

What does the result tell you?

Look for a suggested English bird name and visible clues. An uncertain photo may get a broader bird group or possible matches. Treat the answer as a starting point, not a verified sighting.

Place and season help narrow down which birds are plausible. They cannot prove an identification; check the visible markings too. Cornell’s photo ID guidance.

Give the bird a clearer frame

  • Keep the whole bird visible, including its bill, wings and tail.
  • Focus on one bird rather than a distant flock.
  • If details are blurred or hidden, try a clearer photo or another angle.

Bird photo identification questions

Can I identify a bird from a picture on my phone?

Yes. Open this page in your browser and choose a photo. You do not need to install an app or create an account.

Do I need the exact date?

No. August, autumn or last weekend are fine. Add the approximate place as well.

Will a blurry photo give a reliable answer?

It may not. Small details can separate similar birds. Check the suggested clues against a trusted local bird guide; try another photo if they do not fit.

Can it identify a bird by sound or description?

This tool needs a photo. It does not accept audio or identify birds from a description alone.

Who can see my photo and result?

Anyone with your result link can view the saved photo, location, time and answer. They are kept on this server for 30 days. Share the link only if you are comfortable sharing those details.
